Buzz and Peggy

Buzz Heeschen and Peggy Collins HeeschenHometown:
originally—South Euclid, OH; currently—Huntsville, AL

Favorite place on campus:
Our favorite place on campus was beautiful Stuy Glen—a lovely woodland setting

Where did you live on campus?

  • Peggy lived in Stuyvesant Hall (freshman and senior years) and in Austin (sophomore and junior years)
  • Buzz lived in Selby Stadium freshman year and in the Phi Gamma Delta House the other 2 years.

What brought you to OWU?
Buzz decided to attend Ohio Wesleyan back in 1959 because it offered a 3/2 program which would allow him to transfer into MIT after 3 years. His ultimate goal was to be accepted into the NASA astronaut program. A smaller school like OWU also gave him the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate football and wrestling. His high school sweetheart, Peggy, joined him a year later when she learned that OWU had an excellent elementary education program.

Major/minors:

  • Buzz—Physics
  • Peggy—Elementary Education

Campus activities:
We would advise freshmen to participate in extracurricular activities and find jobs on campus. These activities help you learn to budget your time effectively and supplement the academic experience. For instance, Peggy worked the dorm switchboard and served as senior advisor to a corridor of Stuyvesant Hall freshman; while Buzz was a janitor at Edwards Gymnasium and drove a delivery truck. We also both participated in Greek life—Buzz with Phi Gamma Delta and Peggy with Delta Gamma.

We made many lasting friends at OWU and still keep in touch even though they are scattered throughout the country.

Career path after OWU:

  • Buzz pursued a career as an engineer and manager and, in spite of pursuing a technical career, the solid foundation in liberal arts gained through OWU contributed greatly to his success.
  • Peggy owes her success as a teacher to the many details stressed by Dr. Martha Dallmann. We owe a lot to OWU and established the Heeschen Endowed Scholarship as a way to pay our success forward to the younger generation. There is a certain satisfaction knowing that we are helping promote the liberal arts.

Alexander ReidellHometown:
Dayton, OH

Favorite place on campus:
I usually like to study in the science center outside the chemistry professors’ offices, or in the library. Sitting outside the professors’ offices makes it easier to ask questions whenever I have them.

Where do you live on campus?
Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity House

What brought you to OWU?
I chose to attend OWU after coming to campus for a track and field overnight visit. Once I visited and knew I would like to attend OWU. I wanted to be involved in the Honors program, and I appreciated there was a wide variety of class options. And with the help from scholarships I was able to turn my hopes of attending OWU into a reality.

Major/minors:
Chemistry with minors in Computer Science and Music

Campus activities:
I am involved in Greek life, track and field, IFC and the Ohio Wesleyan Athletic Council. I love to spend time outside of the classroom hanging out with my friends, or playing the piano.

Career path after OWU:
After graduating from OWU, I plan on going to graduate school for computational chemistry.

This scholarship truly helps me accomplish my goal towards graduating with a degree in chemistry, and being able to move onto graduate school. The scholarship received makes it easier for me to pay for college, along with being able to become more involved on campus.
